Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger

Charge Smarter, Drive Further
With your own electric vehicle charging point at home, you have got power when you need it. You do not waste time driving to a public charging point and waiting for your car to charge. You can choose when you want to charge and take advantage of cheaper off-peak rates too.
The Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger is fitted to the wall on the outside of your house or in the Garage and can provide charge to your Electric Vehicle’s battery at a quicker rate than standard chargers that plug into domestic sockets. The typical home charge points charger offers from 3-7kW, but can go up to 22kW if you have three-phase power at your property.
Getting EV charger fitted to your home is a relatively easy process, especially if you own your home and do not need to seek landlord permission before installing it.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
An EV charger is by far the most convenient way to charge your electric vehicle at home. With a home EV charger, you can charge your vehicle whenever suits you, no waiting, no stress. There is no need to hang around a public charging point for hours or, even worse, queue to use an electric car charger.
You can charge an EV using a regular domestic three-pin socket, but a dedicated home EV charger is a much faster option. Your electric car will charge 3x faster on a home 7kW EV chargepoint than a 3-pin household socket. Household sockets are designed for standard home appliances and are not equipped to handle the substantial loads required for EV charging. Using such a household socket can lead to overheating of the electrical circuit and, in the worst-case scenario, a fire risk.
Yes, you can have an EV charger installed at home on the outside wall or in the Garage. Installation of a 3.6kW or 7 kW charger will take just a few hours and will likely require no changes to your current power supply. The installer will drill through the exterior wall to allow the EV Charger to be connected to the electrics and wired to the household mains. A more powerful home charger requires three-phase power which isn’t standard in most homes, making installation more complex.
Think about where your car’s charging port is and where would be most convenient for you to park from where the home charge point can comfortably reach with the cable.
You do not need permission to install an EV charger if you live in a house you own and have private parking. If you rent a home or own a flat, you will have to seek permission from your landlord or property manager before arranging an installation. Renters and flat owners may be eligible for the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) grant, which can lower the cost of getting an EV charger by up to £350.
Only a qualified and competent electrician who has passed relevant qualifications can install an EV charger. They should hold a qualification for chargepoint installation (2921) and be registered with the Competent Person Scheme.
They simply mean that the EV charge point comes with a fixed (tethered) or without a fixed (untethered) cable. The key difference is in the way the charging cable attaches to the device. A tethered EV home charger is a chargepoint placed on a wall with a permanently attached cable, which cannot be removed from the device. This type of setup tends to be larger than an untethered charger because the cable is stored alongside the charging device, either on display or hidden within a box.
An untethered charger has no permanently attached cable. It is sometimes also referred to as a Universal Charger because it has a socket which allows you to plug in cables with different types of connectors. An untethered charger has no attached cable by default. To charge your EV, you will need to plug your own cable into this socket.
Generally home EV chargers have features and functions that require a Wi-Fi connection to access. Wi-Fi enabled chargers are optional, but the smart features they include can be extremely beneficial. Smart chargers require a stable internet connection to function, so it is worth making sure it will be within the range of the Wi-Fi router or a Wi-Fi extender prior to the installation. If your EV loses connection to the Wi-Fi at any point, you will still be able to charge, but you may lose access to the charger’s smart features.
Most home charge point chargers come with Type 2 charging cables, as these are the ones used for new EV models. Type 1 charging cables were used in some older editions, so you might need to check your vehicle’s manual to make sure you are sure of what cable you will need. Home charge points are available as 3kW, 7kW, and 22kW power outputs, but not all properties have the phase-three power needed to supply the 22kW option.
Even if your EV charger can accept a faster charging rate, it will only charge at the chargepoint’s maximum rate and vice versa. For example, an electric car that can charge at 11kW will only charge at a maximum of 7kW on a 7kW charger. If it is plugged into a 22kW chargepoint it will still charge, but no faster than 11kW.
Generally speaking, do not charge every day unless you need to. Natural degradation may occur in the battery based on the number of charging cycles that are used over its lifespan.
An EV driver saves money overall by powering the car with electricity rather than fossil fuels, the home energy bill will be bigger than it was before. The good news is that by adjusting your charging schedule to take place at certain times, it is possible to take advantage of time of use tariffs which have specific periods when electricity is cheaper. It is possible to schedule when your car charges either via most electric cars/ associated apps, or via a smart home charger’s app.
